We could not complete your iTunes Store request. An unknown error occurred (-4).

Been a rough morning here on the East Coast of the U.S. as we’ve been working diligently at installing the new iPhone 2.0 Firmware. There’s already several articles out there about difficulties regarding installation of the new iPhone 2.0 firmware and we’ve experienced this in two parts.

First, we couldn’t wait for the new 2.0 firmware to officially come out through iTunes so we went and grabbed the golden master on MacRumors site. (Apple has since told Macrumors to remove the link.)

After downloading the 225 MB file, we installed it by following the instructions of a Twitter user. Evidently, if you’re going to install the upgrade from your machine, you need to “option-click” the “check for updates” button. We did and installed it. And, then came our first problem below:

iphone error 9838

On the Apple support forums we found others experiencing this particular issue that has to do with flushing the iPhone’s cache using the terminal window. To quote from the thread:

i ended up doing what the person said worked for them, but you might want to try flushing the DNS first to see if that works.

to flush the DNS cache in terminal/x11:

LEOPARD:
sudo dscacheutil -flushcache

Otherwise, the phone is only good for emergency use… presumably to call Apple! Here’s the support thread:

(as we write this post, the discussion boards just shut down! Can you say iPhone excitement? And a bit of a problem on the installation.)

iPhone installation issues

At this point, we assume that flushing the cache worked, but a new error has popped up on our iMac. This time it was “We could not complete your iTunes Store request. An unknown error occurred (-4).”

Ahh… the dreaded -4. We have no idea what this means other than it appears - from before the discussion boards shut down - the new firmware upgrade was overloaded with requests largely due to the new iPhone but maybe more importantly the interest in the new iPhone App Store available in iTunes 7.7.

Stay tuned.
