It Rains In Las Vegas
For the past week, I experienced Las Vegas – the other city that never sleeps.
In comparing the East Village of New York City, there are several notable differences with the Las Vegas lifestyle. (Oh, the irony.)
First, cabs seem to cost a fortune. My co-worker and I took what would amount to short $5-10 cab rides in NYC, and spent $15-20 in Vegas. I’d like to see a study on what’s going on there – is my mind playing tricks with me? Las Vegas isn’t that big.
Another difference: people can smoke indoors – but they can’t smoke in restaurants, thankfully. As it turns out, this wasn’t ever an issue despite the fact I’m not particularly fond of cigarette or cigar smoke.
Vegas architects have figured out the ventilation business.
Another difference: lots of hookers. Hey, they may be floating around NYC but in Vegas it’s wide-open and legal. Or is it? According to Wikipedia, prosititution in Nevada is legal in some places, but the Las Vegas Review Journal says they’re thinking about it for the Strip. Coulda fooled me.
Final observation: the sky in the East Village can be hard to see and yet still yield beautiful sunsets, for example. In fact, if I was in a high rise apartment building in the East Village, I might say that the EV sky is comparable.
Nonetheless, the Las Vegas sky, I discovered, can be an exploding canvas of color. My room looked out over a Marriott parking garage, yet beyond the garage, the view improved dramatically with distant mountains and a wide sky. I was fortunate that it’s the “monsoon season” in Las Vegas right now (the opposite of what I experienced in my last visit) where a few inches each year are the norm.
The rain keeps the cumulo circus in constant flux. Hence, a variety of pictures of the Las Vegas sky – all taken during my morning oatmeal with my trusty, Apple iPhone.

A couple years ago, we took a cab from the airport to the Paris. Cab cost was $23. The next year we did the same and it cost $13. via a “slightly” different route. Did we getted ripped off or what?
How about learning enough french to ask how much the fare will be before you get in the cab, and the deciding if it’s too much?

As an Ex NYC resident now living near Vegas.. I hear ya. Cabs out here cost a MINT compared to NYC.
Yes, we are not scared of smoke out here.. lol
Yes, hookers are NOT legal in clark county but its not something they hunt down like in NY. Where I live out in Pahrump, Hookers ARE legal and brothels are near by.. never been there however.. lol
Another difference.. everyone (almost) is armed in Vegas.. lol
It took a while to get used to.. but I love it here now.. its my home.
Grew up in Downtown near Chinatown and moved to midtown in the late 90s.. (Hells Kitchen area) and now I am out in the middle of no where in the desert.. haha
Anyway thanks for the pics.. loved the Flickr site.. great NYC pics.
