Apple iPhone Network Weakness Means Poor Internet Access

Apple Iphone Network WeeknessA survey is out from Wired showing that 3G Apple iPhone users are definitely having trouble out there.

For example, in San Francisco, “10 out of 30 participants reported very slow 3G speeds — barely surpassing EDGE.” This must be frustrating for AT&T notwithstanding the user frustration level. With the additional charges for 3G service, users expect better than the current, old EDGE network.

The problem appears to be traced to bandwidth – there are too many users and not enough towers. Hopefully as the build out continues, these technical difficulties will be eliminated.

Maybe.

For technofiles, GP Teknik and Trender ran tests on the iPhone’s antenna looking to see if 3G may be related to the hardware in the little Apple iPhone or other issues.

As the MacRumors iPhone blog points out, it appears that rumors regarding the iPhone’s “bad” antenna may be unfounded if the test is to be taken at face value. Apple 2.0 follows up that the Wired test clearly shows a network issue rather than a handset issue.

AT&T needs to get its act together.
